Sometimes, you find new hobbies. Other times, you Sometimes, you find new hobbies. Other times, you find new hobbies to double down on your existing hobbies. This right here is an example of that. A few months back, a friend of mine offered me a 3D printer for free. He'd gotten a new one and wanted to give someone he knew to get the opportunity to have as much fun as he did while using it. Fast forward a few months and here we are. A 3D printed capacitance selector box in a 1590B form factor where the model, PCB, and design were all done from scratch. It's taken learning blender, traditional CAD software, and some deep diving in Eagle to get here; but here we are. I've already given it a test drive in a breadboard circuit and can't wait to assemble a couple more in different colors. :) There's still room for various improvements, but I love how so much of this can be built and assembled in-house. Sometimes things don't work out. This was my first Sometimes things don't work out. This was my first attempt at a super simple circuit on a PCB. Had to pick up EagleCAD, figure out how to lay down a schematic, transfer that over to a PCB design, and get it shipped off to fab. I soldered everything in place, put it on the test board, plugged it all in and... Nothing. There's nothing. But it wasn't a lost cause! Now I know way more than I probably should about drawing these things up in CAD and some of the quirks that come with it. Breadboard to PCB doesn't mean success 🤷‍♂️ This probably isn't my last attempt at this, but the turnaround time on these is looooong. So I think I'll see if there's a way to troubleshoot the board that I soldered. Knowing how this whole analog world works, it'll be a whole new ballgame of things I don't understand. This one taught me that I'm not as good at soldering as I was a decade ago. Also had to reflow a couple of things to get the screech go away. A fun and challenging build, from part sourcing all the way to wiring. Had to reflow a couple of spots and up my 3PDT switch solder game. All good lessons born from hating the hum!
